Our skin is the largest organ in our body, and it may suffer because of our lifestyle choices. Skincare is imperative to maintaining a healthy and beautiful complexion. However, sometimes, an unhealthy lifestyle can be detrimental to your skin’s health.

Everyone wants to have brighter and flawless skin that is free of blemishes. However, we often ignore that our skin needs rest and care while sleeping. Your skin has a natural repair system that works nighttime, so it is essential to take proper care of your skin.

How to Take Care of Your Skin: Dos & Don'ts

Taking care of your skin while you are sleeping means you don’t have to spend a lot of time in the morning to make your skin look better.

You can solve many problems with good sleep, but sometimes it’s not enough.

Here are some tips to care for your skin even while sleeping:

  • Choose the right pillow.

Sleeping on a high pillow can cause swelling under the eyes, so choose a low one. The ideal height is about 10 cm. Take off your makeup before going to bed. Sleep on a clean pillow every day and wash it twice a week with a gentle detergent or special laundry soap.

  • Moisturize Effectively.

For the mask to be effective, you need to apply it correctly. First, cleanse and tone, then apply with massage movements starting from the center of the face and moving outwards, paying particular attention to problem areas: T-zone and cheekbones. If you use a moisturizer at night, do not apply it again after applying the mask. Otherwise, you will clog your pores and suffocate your skin.

  • Remove Makeup Before Bedtime.

Sleeping with makeup does way more than keep you from waking up pretty the following day. It clogs your pores, which can lead to acne. The extra bacteria around your eyes can also cause puffy eyes and dark circles, thanks to all that other bacteria around your eyes.

  • Cleanse Your Face.

Even if it was a long day, make sure to wash your face with a mild cleanser before bed. If you go to bed without washing your face, all the dirt and pollutants will get trapped in your pores and cause breakouts.

  • Get Enough Sleep.

Sleeping for at least 8 hours every night is very important in maintaining healthy skin. During sleep, the body produces collagen and repairs damaged cells. If you don’t get enough sleep, it will result in prolonged stress, which causes skin problems.

  • Drink Plenty of Water.

Water is essential in maintaining healthy skin. It helps flush out toxins from the body and keeps the skin well hydrated. Drinking water also prevents premature aging and wrinkles by keeping your body well hydrated.

  • Use Sun Protection.

Exposure to the sun can damage your skin, causing it to age prematurely and develop unsightly brown spots. So make sure that you use sunscreen products when heading outdoors or driving your car during the daytime.

  • Don’t Forget to Exfoliate.

Exfoliation is the process of removing dead cells from the outer layer of your skin. Dead skin cells can cause your complexion to look dull and rough and clog pores and increase acne breakouts.

The skin cells which make up the epidermis, the outer layer of the skin, go through a cycle of growth and shedding every 28 days. When this process speeds up, as it does when we’re young, dead cells build up faster than they can be cleared. This makes us look ‘dull.’ Exfoliating removes these dead cells, helping your skin look more youthful and radiant.

Use a non-abrasive scrub to gently slough off dead skin cells. Alternatively, apply an alpha hydroxy acid or beta hydroxy acid chemical peel product to your face. Alpha and beta hydroxy acids are mild chemicals that help to remove dead skin cells and keep your pores open. This is especially useful if you have oily or acne-prone skin.

  • Use a Night Cream or Serum.

If you have dry skin, using a night cream is probably enough to keep your skin looking hydrated and smooth. However, if you have oily skin, using a product containing retinol will help keep your pores clear and reduce oil production at night. When we sleep, our cells are most active, and the body is busy repairing and regenerating. By applying a nourishing night cream or serum, your skin will be able to soak up all the benefits.

Always having healthy skin is one of the goals that people aim for, every time you want to look pretty and younger, try to use lots of ways to make sure your skin stays young and elastic. Having healthy skin is super important, considering that it is the largest organ of our body and the most visible. Always remember to take care of your skin, and it will do you good.
