Acne is a chronic inflammatory skin condition that occurs when the hair follicles become clogged with dead skin cells and oil from the skin. It is characterized by comedones (blackheads and whiteheads) and pus-filled spots (pustules). It usually starts at puberty and varies in severity from a few spots on the face, neck, back, and chest, which most adolescents will have at some time, to a more significant problem that may cause scarring and impact self-confidence.

Acne can also occur at other stages of life, for example during pregnancy or when starting a new medication. The most common cause of acne is hormonal changes that make the skin produce more sebum (oil), which can block pores and lead to infection. It is the most common skin condition in the United States, affecting up to 50 million Americans annually.

While there are many factors that can contribute to acne, such as hormones and genetics, there are some healthy habits that also contribute to the development of acne. The best way to prevent acne is by maintaining a healthy lifestyle. You need to take care of your health and stay hydrated and nourished.

Here are some tips that you can follow:

  • Healthy Diet

You need to eat a healthy diet. A proper diet with all the essential nutrients will help in preventing acne. Avoid eating greasy or fried food as it can cause acne or make it worse. Foods that are high in sugar and fried foods can cause acne flare-ups. Dairy products and foods high in processed sugar may trigger acne.

Some studies suggest that eating a diet rich in vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants will help prevent acne breakouts. This includes eating plenty of fruits and vegetables, as well as nuts and seeds. This is because these foods are rich in nutrients that may offer antioxidant effects, which may help reduce inflammation.

  • Stay Hydrated

Drink plenty of water every day as this will flush out toxins from your body and thus help you get rid of acne. The average human body needs at least 8 glasses of water every day to function properly. So drink more water than usual if you have acne on your face, neck, back, and chest

  • Face Wash

Wash your face twice daily using lukewarm water and mild soap or cleanser. Avoid using hot water as it can irritate the skin further and cause more inflammation. Also, don’t scrub too hard as this will only aggravate the situation. To avoid bacteria from spreading from one area to another, use a separate towel for each body part that is affected by acne.

Avoid scrubbing your face, which can worsen inflammation. Even gentle scrubs can be too abrasive on inflamed blemishes or inflamed skin. Instead of scrubbing, use a gentle cleanser with your fingertips to cleanse your face.

  • Use sunscreen.

Limit your time in the sun, especially between the hours of 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., and wear protective clothing, such as a long-sleeved shirt, pants, and a broad-brimmed hat.

Over-the-counter (OTC) acne treatments can help heal pimples or even prevent them in the first place. These OTC treatments can sometimes cause redness, irritation, and dryness with overuse, so it’s important to follow the manufacturer’s usage instructions. Here’s what you should know about the most common active ingredients you’ll find in OTC acne treatments:

  1. Benzoyl peroxide. Benzoyl peroxide works best on inflammatory acne-like cysts and red bumps — because it kills acne-causing bacteria.
  2. Salicylic acid. This ingredient is ideal for blackheads and whiteheads because it works to unclog pores and reduce inflammation.
  3. Sulfur. Sulfur is a natural ingredient that’s often gentler than the two mentioned above. It can dry out dead skin cells to unclog pores and absorbs excess sebum
  • Limit the use of makeup

It’s tempting to use makeup to cover up pimples. However, doing so may clog pores and trigger outbreaks. It can be tough to nix makeup from your daily routine. If you still decide to apply products, you should choose a foundation or concealer that’s non-comedogenic and fragrance-free so your skin doesn’t become even more irritated. A tinted moisturizer with salicylic acid can be a good option for coverage and acne-fighting power in one. If you wear makeup, wash it off at night before you go to bed to help prevent clogged pores that could lead to breakouts.
